Prague in December is a proposal set built by the city itself: the giant tree on Old Town Square, wooden stalls glowing gold, mulled wine steam in the cold air. It's also very crowded — so a Christmas market proposal succeeds or fails on timing. Here's the plan we use.
The setting
The main market fills Old Town Square from roughly late November to early January, with the great tree lit against the Týn Church spires; a second market runs on Wenceslas Square and a calmer one at Republic Square by the Municipal House. Evening light-up time is the magic — and the crush.
Timing beats everything
Weekday mornings the market is set up, lit and nearly empty — that's our window for the proposal itself. If you dream of the evening glow, we propose at the quiet edge of the square (or under the Powder Tower arcade) and then walk into the market lights for portraits, mulled wine in hand.
Dress for the cold — it photographs beautifully
Wool coats, scarves and gloves look wonderful against the lights; just keep the ring in an outer pocket you can reach without wrestling three layers. Cold hands shake — a pair of hand warmers is the least romantic, most useful thing you'll pack.
The photography in winter light
December sun sets before 4pm, which means "evening" market photos start mid-afternoon — no late nights needed. Steam, breath and bokeh lights give winter proposals a warmth summer can't fake. See our month-by-month guide for the wider winter picture.
