The Bastei is the image that sells Saxony: a stone bridge from 1851 leaping between sandstone towers 190 metres above the Elbe, with a whole rock city stretching behind it. It is 40 minutes from the Czech border and about 90 from Prague — which makes Germany's most famous viewpoint an entirely reasonable Czech-holiday day trip.

Beating the crowds
The Bastei receives well over a million visitors a year and midday in summer is genuinely crowded. Sunrise changes everything: the car park is empty, the light is low and gold, and the bridge is silent. We plan almost every Bastei proposal for first light, with breakfast in Rathen afterwards.
Crossing from the Czech side
The Czech and Saxon halves of this sandstone landscape are one geological region split by a border you barely notice. Hřensko and the Pravčická brána are 40 minutes away; many couples do the Czech arch one day and the German bridge the next.
Frequently asked questions
How far is the Bastei from Prague?
About 130 km, an hour and a half by car. It is entirely feasible as a day trip from Prague, and even easier from Děčín or Dresden.
Do you need a permit for photos at the Bastei?
Not for ordinary personal photography on the public paths and viewpoints. It sits in a national park, so stay on marked trails, and note that drones are prohibited.
When is the Bastei least crowded?
Sunrise, by a wide margin — and weekdays outside July and August. By 10am in summer the bridge is busy; by sunset it thins again.
Is it accessible without hiking?
Yes. There is a car park a short, mostly level walk from the bridge, so no climbing is required. The steeper trails up from Rathen are optional.
