Bratislava is the most compact capital in Europe — a pastel old town you can cross in ten minutes, a white castle on the hill above it, and the Danube running through the middle. Ten kilometres west, Devín castle stands in ruins on a crag where the Morava joins the Danube and three countries almost touch.

The confluence at Devín
Devín is where the Morava flows into the Danube, with Austria directly opposite. It was one of the most heavily guarded stretches of the Iron Curtain; today it is a peaceful ruin above two rivers, which gives a proposal there a quietly powerful backdrop.
Getting there from Prague or Vienna
Bratislava is about three and a half hours from Prague, but only one hour from Vienna — and there is a fast boat between the two cities on the Danube in season. Couples doing our Vienna chapter often add Bratislava as a second country in the same trip.
