Jindřichův Hradec has the third-largest château complex in the Czech Republic, standing directly on a lake in the middle of a small South Bohemian town. Most visitors have never heard of it. That combination — enormous beauty, minimal attention — is the reason we keep sending couples here.

The whole château doubled in still water, best on calm mornings. The lakeside path lets you choose your own distance from the world.
2. The Rondel garden pavilion

A late-renaissance rotunda whose interior is a riot of gilded stucco — one of the most beautiful small rooms in Central Europe, opening onto a formal garden.
3. Náměstí Míru

Arcades, a plague column and pastel gables sloping down toward the water. Quiet on weekdays, warm in evening light.
4. The château's three courtyards

Arcaded galleries stacked in tiers — grand, shaded and superb when the sun is high and harsh outside.

Willows, reflections and open meadow — where to go when you want green rather than stone.
A place that rewards slowness
Nothing here is rushed. You can walk the lake, cross into the château courtyards, sit on the square with a coffee and come back for sunset — all within fifteen minutes on foot. For couples who find famous landmarks stressful, this town is a genuine relief.
On the way to somewhere
Jindřichův Hradec sits between Prague and the Austrian border, half an hour from Třeboň and an hour from Telč. A South Bohemian loop of all three is one of the most beautiful two-day drives in the country.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Jindřichův Hradec from Prague?
About 150 km, a little over two hours by car. It is best treated as part of a South Bohemian loop with Třeboň and Telč rather than a there-and-back day trip.
Can you take photos inside the château?
The courtyards are freely accessible in season; the interiors and the Rondel pavilion are tour-only and have their own photography rules, which we check before including them in a plan.
Is the lake reflection reliable?
Best in the first hours after sunrise, when the water is calm. Wind in the afternoon breaks the mirror — which is why we schedule lake-reflection sessions early.
What else is nearby for a full day?
Třeboň and its pond dam are half an hour away, Telč about an hour, and the Austrian border a similar distance. All three towns have UNESCO-level architecture and no crowds.
