Königstein is not a castle on a hill; it is a fortress that occupies the entire top of a table mountain, 240 metres above the Elbe, with nine hectares of ramparts, barracks and courtyards inside its walls. Getting to the top
You do not have to climb: a panoramic lift and a shuttle bus operate from the car parks, and inside, the plateau is flat and easy walking. That accessibility is a real advantage for a surprise — nobody arrives out of breath or in the wrong shoes.
When to go
Morning haze over the Elbe valley gives layers and depth; late afternoon lights the sandstone warm. The fortress is open year-round, and winter — with mist below the walls — is spectacular and almost empty.

About 130 km, an hour and a half by car. It is ten minutes from Bad Schandau and twenty from the Bastei, so the whole area works as one trip.
Is there an entry fee?
Yes, the fortress is a ticketed open-air museum, open year-round with seasonal hours. Personal photography is allowed throughout the grounds.
Do you have to hike up?
