The Rakotzbrücke is a 19th-century basalt arch built so precisely that its reflection completes a perfect circle in the lake below. It sits in a rhododendron park in eastern Saxony, and in late May the whole valley detonates into pink and purple. It has become one of the most photographed romantic spots in Germany — with good reason.

The circle. Stand at the water's edge on a still morning and the arch closes with its own image — a ring, which for an engagement is almost too on-the-nose.

Late May and early June bring waves of bloom along the lake paths — the park's peak fortnight.

Free-standing basalt pillars set in the water like a miniature Giant's Causeway.

A UNESCO landscape park spanning the German-Polish border, with a neo-renaissance palace — an excellent second stop.
The rules on the bridge
You cannot walk on the Rakotzbrücke — it is a protected monument and closed to foot traffic, and that is enforced. Every good photograph of it is taken from the shore anyway, so this costs you nothing. Please do not climb it for a photo; the fine is real and the structure is fragile.
Getting the circle
Still water is essential. Early morning, before wind, is the only reliable window — and it is also when you will have the shore to yourself. Autumn adds gold foliage; late May adds rhododendrons and considerably more visitors.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Kromlau from Prague?
About 230 km, roughly three hours by car — it is in far eastern Saxony near the Polish border. Many couples combine it with Görlitz, an hour south.
Can you walk across the Rakotzbrücke?
No. The bridge is a protected monument and closed to pedestrians. All photographs are taken from the lakeside paths, which is where the reflection works anyway.
When is the best time for the perfect circle?
Early morning on a windless day, when the lake is glassy. Overcast light also works well and avoids harsh contrast between the dark arch and bright sky.
When do the rhododendrons bloom?
Typically from mid-May into early June, varying with the season. That fortnight is spectacular and also the busiest time of year in the park.
