Melk Abbey rises in gold and ochre on a rock above the Danube, its terrace hanging over the river at the entrance to the Wachau — a UNESCO valley of terraced vineyards, apricot orchards and small wine villages that runs 36 kilometres downstream to Krems. It is, without much argument, the most beautiful stretch of the Danube.

Two short seasons worth chasing
Apricot blossom in late March and early April, and the grape harvest in late September and October, are the two moments the Wachau is most itself. Both are weather-dependent and brief — if either is your dream, keep the date a little flexible.
Distances
Melk is about an hour west of Vienna and three and a half hours from Prague. Couples doing our Vienna chapter often add the Wachau as a day out; if you are travelling from Prague it is worth an overnight in a wine village.

Can you photograph at Melk Abbey?
The terrace and gardens are part of the ticketed visit and personal photography is generally allowed; the church interior has stricter rules. Organised shoots need arrangement with the abbey.
When do the apricot trees blossom?
Usually late March into mid-April, varying with the year. The season is short — around two weeks — and worth building a trip around if blossom matters to you.
Are Danube boats a good option?
Yes, in season. Boats run between Melk and Krems through the valley, and the deck at golden hour is a lovely, low-effort setting for the moment.
