Engagement Photos in Regensburg

By Kemal Onur Özman — Prague proposal photographer, 500+ proposals since 2014 · Updated August 2026

Regensburg escaped the war almost intact, leaving the largest medieval old town north of the Alps: 1,500 listed buildings, Italian-style patrician towers built by merchant families competing for height, a gothic cathedral, and a 12th-century stone bridge over the Danube that was an engineering wonder of its age. UNESCO listed the lot.

Built in the 1140s and the model for later medieval bridges across Europe — including, indirectly, Prague's. Cathedral behind, river below.

2. The cathedral and its square

3. The patrician tower lanes

Narrow streets overhung by Italianate stone towers, unlike anything else in Germany.

Bridges and their descendants

Regensburg's Stone Bridge predates Prague's Charles Bridge by two centuries and helped establish how such bridges were built. For couples whose story includes Prague, photographing on the older sibling of Charles Bridge is a quietly satisfying idea.

Practicalities from Czechia

Regensburg is about two and a half hours from Prague through the Bohemian Forest, and the drive itself is beautiful. It also makes an easy pairing with Passau, an hour downstream, for a two-city Danube weekend.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Regensburg from Prague?

About 230 km, roughly two and a half hours by car via the Bavarian border. It is a comfortable long day or an easy overnight.

Is the Stone Bridge older than Charles Bridge?

Yes, by around two centuries — Regensburg's bridge was completed in the 1140s, Charles Bridge was begun in 1357. Regensburg's was a model for medieval bridge building across Europe.

Do you need permission for photos in the old town?

No, ordinary photography in public streets and on the bridge is free. Interiors such as the cathedral have their own house rules.

What is Walhalla and is it worth the detour?

A 19th-century neoclassical hall of fame built as a Greek temple on a hill above the Danube, twenty minutes from the city. The stairway and river panorama are outstanding — yes, worth it.
