Oybin is what German romantic painters meant by "romantic": a gothic monastery ruin standing roofless on top of a sandstone dome, with pines growing through the windows. Caspar David Friedrich painted it. A narrow-gauge steam train still climbs there from Zittau, which sits at the corner where Germany, Poland and Czechia meet.

Arriving by steam
The Zittauer Schmalspurbahn runs year-round on a published timetable. Building the day around a specific train adds structure to a surprise — "we have tickets at eleven" explains everything — and gives you a spectacular arrival. Check timetables in advance; frequency varies by season.
