A Little History
The story first.
Charles IV founded Karlštejn in 1348 as a fortress-reliquary for the imperial crown jewels — a castle built not for war but for the most precious things in the kingdom. Its towers step up the crag in tiers, exactly as a castle is supposed to, which is why it has been Bohemia's postcard for six centuries.

The village lane winds up between timbered houses until the towers suddenly fill the sky. Vineyards climb the opposite slope, the Berounka glints below, and from the walls the Bohemian forest rolls to the horizon. Late afternoon, when the coaches leave and the light turns amber on the limestone, the whole hill quietens into something medieval.
