A Little History

The story first.

Loket — "the elbow" — fills a tight loop of the Ohře river, a gothic castle at its heart that once guarded the young Charles IV. Goethe celebrated his 74th birthday here in 1823, deep in his last great love story; Casino Royale later cast the town as Montenegro.

Small, stone and almost absurdly picturesque: from the bridge the whole town stacks up inside its river loop like a model. Lanes wind to the castle, the river slides green below the walls, and by evening the day visitors from Karlovy Vary are gone. Goethe chose this place for romance — the precedent stands.
