January is Prague at its quietest — the markets wind down after the first week, the tour groups vanish, and the city belongs to the people who live here. Add river mist, occasional snow and a 16:30 sunset, and you get the most atmospheric (and most private) proposal month of the year.
1. Charles Bridge in the mist
The river
Winter dawns pull fog off the Vltava and turn the statues into silhouettes — January's version of the bridge is the most cinematic of the year.

Fresh snow, empty ramparts, the city white and silent below — if it snows overnight, go at first light.

Light and golden hour
Sunrise around 7:55, sunset around 16:30 mid-month. That's the friendliest sunrise of the year — golden light on an empty Charles Bridge without a brutal alarm — and it means "evening" photos are done by late afternoon, leaving the whole night for celebrating.
Weather and what to wear
Expect −2 to 3 °C, grey skies broken by crisp blue days, and a real chance of snow. A tailored winter coat photographs beautifully (see what to wear); bring gloves you can pull off fast, and keep the ring in an outer pocket, not deep under layers.
Crowds and closures
Mid-January to mid-February is the lowest tourist season — landmarks that need a 6am start in summer are calm at 9. The trade-off: formal gardens (Vrtba included) are closed for winter, so the season belongs to bridges, squares, hilltops and grand cafés.
