Getting there and timing it
Plzeň is about an hour from Prague by car or direct train — comfortably a half-day, and easy to combine with Karlovy Vary or the Bohemian Forest. The square faces open sky, so it takes both morning and evening light well; the cathedral casts a long shadow across it from mid-afternoon, which is either a problem or the best frame of the day depending on where you stand.

About 90 km — roughly an hour by car on the D5 motorway, or 55 minutes on the fastest direct trains. Easy as a half-day trip, so you can propose in the morning and be back in Prague for dinner.
Do you need a permit for engagement photos in Plzeň?
Not for the public square, streets, parks or riverbanks — normal photography in public space is free. Interiors (the cathedral, the synagogue, the brewery) have their own rules and sometimes a photo fee, so we clear those in advance if your plan includes them.
When is the best time of year for photos in Plzeň?
May–June and September–October give the kindest light and mild weather. December adds the Christmas market and lights on the square, with sunset around 16:00 — evening atmosphere by mid-afternoon.
