Engagement Photos in České Budějovice

By Kemal Onur Özman — Prague proposal photographer, 500+ proposals since 2014 · Updated August 2026

South Bohemia's capital is built around one of the most satisfying squares in Central Europe: a near-perfect square of arcaded houses, 133 metres on each side, with a baroque fountain at the centre and a black tower on the corner. Add two rivers, willow-lined banks and a fairy-tale castle twenty minutes away, and you have a full day of proposal scenery.

1. Přemysl Otakar II Square

Arcades on all four sides, the Samson fountain in the middle and pastel façades in every direction. The arcades give you a covered, beautifully lit option even in rain.

2. The Black Tower

72 metres and 225 steps to a gallery with the whole of South Bohemia below — on clear days you can see the Alps. A proposal at the top has a very small, very private audience.

3. Malše riverbank & Sokolský ostrov

Willows over slow water, a wooden footbridge and the old town's towers behind. The gentlest, greenest spot in the city.

4. Piaristické náměstí

Behind the square · Map ↗

A small, cobbled square by the monastery and the old salt house — medieval, quiet and often completely empty.

5. Hluboká Castle

The white "Windsor of Bohemia" and its gardens — the grandest possible second act to a morning in town.

Building the day

The classic South Bohemian day: portraits in the arcades at morning light, the question at Hluboká's terraces in the afternoon, dinner back on the square. Two hours from Prague makes it a full day rather than a hop — or a very comfortable overnight, since the town's hotels sit right on the square.

Light and weather notes

The square is enclosed, so direct sun reaches the middle only in the hours around noon; the arcades stay soft and even all day, which is why we shoot them regardless of weather. The riverbanks catch beautiful low sun in the last hour before sunset.

Frequently asked questions

How far is České Budějovice from Prague?

About 150 km, roughly two hours by car or by direct train. It works as a long day trip, and pairs naturally with Hluboká castle and Český Krumlov, which are both within half an hour.

Can you propose inside the Black Tower?

Yes — the gallery is open to visitors in season for a small entry fee, and it is rarely crowded. The staircase is narrow, so we usually photograph the arrival and the moment at the top rather than the climb.

Is České Budějovice better than Český Krumlov for photos?

They are different: Krumlov is dense, medieval and famous; Budějovice is spacious, renaissance and quiet. If you want the postcard, choose Krumlov; if you want room to breathe and no crowds, choose Budějovice.

What if it rains?

The arcades run around all four sides of the square — a covered, photogenic loop that works in any weather. It is one of the most rain-proof locations in the country.
