Engagement Photos: Vltava Monasteries

By Kemal Onur Özman — Prague proposal photographer, 500+ proposals since 2014 · Updated August 2026

South of Český Krumlov the Vltava is still a mountain river, looping through forest past two great Cistercian monasteries and a castle on a rock. Zlatá Koruna, Vyšší Brod and Rožmberk are all within half an hour of each other — cloisters, vaulting and water, with a fraction of Krumlov's visitors.

2. Vyšší Brod monastery

Founded in 1259 and never dissolved for long — a library, a gothic church and quiet courtyards near the river.

3. Rožmberk nad Vltavou castle

The quiet side of Krumlov

Český Krumlov is rightly famous and consequently busy. Fifteen minutes upstream the crowds vanish entirely. Many of our couples base themselves in Krumlov, propose at Zlatá Koruna or Rožmberk in the morning, then return to town for dinner having had the whole river to themselves.

Access notes

Monastery interiors and cloisters are tour-based and seasonal; the churchyards, river paths and village settings are open. Dívčí Kámen involves a pleasant 30-minute walk through forest — the reason it stays so quiet.

Frequently asked questions

How far are these from Český Krumlov?

Zlatá Koruna is about 15 minutes, Rožmberk 25 and Vyšší Brod around 35 minutes by car. All three work as half-day additions to a Krumlov stay.

Can you photograph inside the monasteries?

Cloisters and interiors are shown on guided tours with their own photography rules, and organised sessions need prior arrangement. The exteriors, courtyards and river settings are freely accessible.

Is it possible to combine a canoe trip with photos?

In summer, yes — this stretch of the Vltava is a classic canoe route. A proposal on a gravel bank mid-river is memorable, and we plan the meeting point along the water.

Which one is the most romantic?

Rožmberk for the castle-above-a-river-bend image, Zlatá Koruna for gothic cloister atmosphere. If you can only do one and want the picture everyone remembers, choose Rožmberk.
