Proposing with Kids: The Family Proposal Guide

Some proposals aren't just a question between two people — they're the moment a family makes it official. Whether your children are yours together, or you're asking a partner whose kids you love, including them can turn the sweetest moment of your life into the sweetest moment of theirs. It just needs slightly different planning.

Ways kids can be part of it

The classics work because they're wonderful: a child walking up with the ring box at the key moment; siblings holding a "Will you marry our mum/dad?" sign they unfold on cue; or the proposal happening quietly first, with the kids running in for the family hug seconds after the yes. We help choreograph whichever fits your crew.

Age changes everything

Under 4: unpredictable and gloriously so — give them no job, and have them appear after the yes with another adult. 4–8: perfect ring bearers and sign holders, but tell them their job only minutes before; little hearts can't hold big secrets. 9+: can keep the secret for a day or two and often become your best co-conspirators — some of our favourite planning messages have come from twelve-year-olds.

The logistics that save the day

Bring a second adult as the designated wrangler so you can be present in the moment. Schedule around naps and meals, not around the light — a rested child at 10am beats a meltdown at golden hour. Pack snacks, keep the whole event under an hour, and choose a spot where small legs can roam: parks and gardens over narrow bridges.

Where it works best

Green, open locations with space to run: Stromovka's meadows, Letná's avenues, the Kinský Garden, Kampa's lawns — all covered in our parks guide. The boat proposal also works beautifully with kids aboard as the "surprise crew". Dawn landmark missions with toddlers: heroic, not recommended.

The photos you'll keep

The question, the yes, the pile-on hug — and then a proper family portrait session while everyone's dressed and giddy. For blended families especially, these become the pictures on the wall: the day everyone officially chose each other.
